Amazon same-day delivery is so popular, it’s now available in stores that aren't on Amazon! The marketplace is currently testing a new partnership with local retail stores that allows delivery through the Amazon app or site in a program that’s bound to have a bigger effect on the entire Amazon marketplace.
But how does Amazon same-day delivery work with these brick-and-mortar stores? Is it available everywhere? What local retail stores are participating? Since the service is still new, it’s understandable to be confused — so below we provide the answers to all your questions.
Amazon same-day delivery is available mainly for Prime members; non-Prime shoppers can still use it, but with an additional fee. This might change in the future, but keep in mind that this feature is still in its early stages.
But how does Amazon same-day delivery work from retail stores? The idea is basically this: shoppers can go to either the Amazon site or the Amazon app where there’s a special section titled, “Delivery from nearby stores.” (They can also use the search bar with the filter, “Brands Near Me.”)
Here, the products from participating retail stores are listed just like other Amazon products with a photo, ratings, and price all shown together. Shoppers can search and browse as normal and fill their cart with whatever they’d like.
When they select the same-day delivery option at checkout, the order is immediately sent to the retail store where a local sales associate handles it. An Amazon driver then comes to the store, picks up the order, and delivers it straight to the customer’s home. Some stores even have the option for customers to pick up their purchases at the store.
At the moment, the service is free to Prime members, as long as the shoppers spend over $25. If a Prime member spends less than $25, there will be a $2.99 surcharge. Non-Prime shoppers can still use this service, but they have to pay an additional flat fee of $9.99 per delivery order.
While everything looks good on paper, in practice there are still some wrinkles to iron out. In particular, same-day delivery is not as immediate as it sounds; it could take nine or ten hours for deliveries to be completed, with a minimum of five hours. Furthermore, shoppers are urged to make purchases before 5:00 p.m. to meet the 10:00 p.m. deadline for deliveries.
Still, it promises to be a valuable addition to Amazon’s delivery chain when it’s ready for mass roll-out. For now though, Amazon same-day delivery from retail stores is only available in select cities, with select brands.
Of course, not every brick-and-mortar retailer is going to cozy up to Amazon, but there are a select few big names that are currently participating in the partnership.
The following brands offer their products as Amazon same-day delivery items in select cities:
Keep in mind that not each of these stores is available in every participating city.
Before Amazon launches its service internationally or even nationwide, it’s first undergoing a limited release in major U.S. cities. Specifically, the current Amazon same-day delivery locations include:
However, individual stores in other locations are also participating. For example, the Diesel store in Pennsylvania’s King of Prussia is participating, as is the PacSun in Illinois’s Fox Valley Mall.
In short, more competition. Amazon sellers will now be in direct competition with brick-and-mortar stores on top of the already fierce competition from other online sellers. While the retail brands may not change their pricing strategies to sell on Amazon, the advantage of same-day delivery is still theirs.
Among other things, sellers have an increased urgency to enroll their products in Amazon Prime, so they can compete with expedited deliveries. We already explained how to sell on Amazon Prime in a previous article, but to summarize, sellers need to:
Improving your seller feedback and product reviews is one of the best ways to boost the reputation of your Amazon business.
Software such as FeedbackFive can speed up the process by automatically requesting feedback and reviews from your past customers.
Even if you’re not competing with Amazon same-day delivery, selling your products through Prime is still a worthwhile strategy. It gives you access to Prime-exclusive events like Prime Day, not to mention that Prime members tend to shop and spend more. Then, as the same-day delivery program ramps up, you'll be ready with offers that are just as attractive as theirs!
